自己紹介
右手と左手の関係に象徴される対掌性の概念は、私たちが人間と自然の関わりを対象化して意識するようになる近代以前から私たちの無意識に宿っていたと言える。この問題が学問的な考察の対象として最初に取り上げられたのは哲学の分野であった。プロイセンの哲学者カントが空間が先か事物が先か、という問題を論じた『空間における方位区別の第一根拠』(1768年)で、「私たち人間は持って生まれた体の形を通してのみ左右非対称という概念を規定できるのだ」と結論づけた。自然科学では、イギリス王立協会のLord Kelvinが1884年のBaltimore Lecturesで、右手と左手のような非対称なかたちの組のことをキラリティ(ギリシャ語の「掌」が語源)と呼び、そのような関係にあるものをキラルと呼ぶと規定している。一方、素粒子の分野で、放射性核種の崩壊に伴う放射線が反転対称性が破れていることから、素粒子も生まれながらにして空間反転対称性が破れていると考えられてきた。20世紀になってイギリス、グラスゴー大学のLD. Barronは、回転と並進の組み合わせもキラルになると指摘し、いわゆるヘリシティをキラルの定義に加えた。この定義によって素粒子のスピンと運動量の関係性(ヘリシティ)と幾何学的キラリティの概念が統合された。  今日キラリティは、素粒子の世界から宇宙構造まで自然界のあらゆるスケールで、幾何構造と運動の概念を包摂する普遍概念として重要な役割を果たしている。しかしながらキラリテイは、文系、理系研究ともにあくまで現象論的に捉えられ、本質を捉える研究はほとんどされてこなかった。本研究ではキラル物性、キラル磁性の研究を糸口にしてキラル空間とキラリティの本質に迫って行きたい。  現在では以下の項目について研究を進めている。 1. キラル磁性体の合成、設計。 2. キラル磁性体のコヒーレントスピンオーダーが示す特異物性、スピンダイナミクス。 3. 非対称磁場空間の検出。
