  1. Exploring the Pedagogical Possibilities of the Idea of Composition Based on Children's Interests and Strengths, Daisuke Terauchi, Haruna Myodo, The 13th Asia-Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research: Exploring Possibilities and Alternatives in a Changing Future, 2021/09/18, Without Invitation, English, Japan Music Education Society, Tokyo (Virtual Conference), Music-making activities in elementary schools in Japan follow the Japanese national curriculum. The current trend of music-making within the curriculum focuses on elements such as timbre, rhythm, tempo, melody, dynamics, and beat. These activities are expected to help children learn the characteristics of the various elements of music and their functions. However, children may not be able to exercise their creativity freely in such activities due to restrictions based on learning content; in some cases, the music they create may all be similar. Recent studies have reported cases in which teachers deliberately set fewer musical elements when children's improvisation activity, thereby reducing restrictions for the children and eliciting a variety of expressions from them. The idea behind this is to create multi-stylistic collage-style music by first focusing on each child's intention — what they want to attempt and what they are good at — and encouraging them to try these expressions. One of the authors of this paper developed a brand-new learning material, based on the idea of "composition based on children's interests and strengths," in 2017. This study aims to illustrate the activities carried out using the learning material, taught by the authors of this paper, in two classes of the fifth grade (age range of 10-11 years) in Nara, Japan. It focuses on creative music-making practices and the pedagogical possibilities of the idea, through discussing their music-making and creative process. As a result, children could make music with a mixture of diverse expressions. Students mobilized everything for their performances, including a variety of instruments, use of rhythmic patterns, singular sounds that had an impact, and quotations from their music repertoire. Furthermore, based on the characteristics of the children in each class, the content of the music for class 1 and class 2 differed. The pedagogical possibilities of the idea of "composition based on children's interests and strengths" are threefold: first, as we could illustrate from the classes, this idea contributes in eliciting a variety of expressions from the children; second, it facilitates children's realization that they can incorporate these various expressions into their music; and third, it allows children to think of each member's interests and strengths as a starting point of creative activity. Although this is a different approach from the aforementioned current trend in Japan, this need not be limited to music and can be generalized to many other creative projects., preprint

  5. Pedagogical Possibilities of the Application "Sanka Play" for Performer and Audience Interaction in Elementary School Music Classes, Daisuke Terauchi, 12th Asia-Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research, 2019/07/17, Without Invitation, English, Macao Polytechnic Institute, Macao Polytechnic Institute, In 2017, I developed the computer application “Sanka Play,” which enables audience members to participate in improvisational performances by making real-time requests to performers. In most cases of free improvisation, the audience atmosphere influences performers. While audience-performer interaction is generally nonverbal, Sanka Play allows timely verbal interaction. This research aims to determine the positive pedagogical possibilities of using Sanka Play for elementary school music classes. I hypothesized that using Sanka Play for group improvisation activities in music classes would encourage various styles of expressions among the students. Sanka Play was used in two fifth-grade music classes in a Japanese elementary school. The idea of focusing on improvisation utilizing each player's resources of expression is influenced by the work “Cobra” by the American composer John Zorn and the concept “Conduction®” by the American composer Lawrence “Butch” Morris. The “Sanka Play” application was used in two 5th grade music classes in an elementary school, one taught by Daisuke Terauchi, and another taught by Yoriyuki Hode. A close observation of class videos revealed that the application induced students to use various modes of expression such as music, dance, theatrical acting, and even karate. Furthermore, various requests from the students were made to not only improve the performance in general but also help highlight particular strengths of each student’s performing ability. On the other hand, the students sometimes sent silly and impractical requests, which suggests that it is advisable for teachers to provide guidelines for productive interaction to students in advance. From educational viewpoint, this kind of interactive improvisation activity could be an opportunity to nurture empathy. The observation reveals Sanka Play’s pedagogical usefulness and several factors that teachers should consider when using the application. In conclusion, this research illustrates the possibilities of employing a new teaching approach to encourage students to creatively use their own inherent resources for expression in elementary music classes. Rather than cultivating some abilities or sentiments related music or musical activities, Sanka Play activities provide children with a versatile approach to creative thinking these are not limited to musical activities.

  11. Promoting Programming Learning through Composition and Performance: Important Insights of a Practice Class with Sixth Graders, Daisuke Terauchi, Yayoi Kogamoto, Hiroshi Nagayama, The 14th Asia-Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research: Music in the Life, Life in the Music, 2023/08/10, Without Invitation, English, Korean Music Education Society (KMES), Seoul National University of Education, Republic of Korea, In Japan, programming education has become compulsory in elementary schools since 2020 and has been implemented in all subjects, including music. Many practitioners and researchers have introduced and reported on the practice of programming education. Many of its activities involve composing music using computers. Such activities are considered appropriate for learning the characteristics and functions of various musical elements (e.g., rhythm, melody, harmony) and for learning the three basic elements of programming, sequence, repetition, and branching. However, such activities alone present few opportunities to learn about the relation between programming and indeterminate music such as sound play and improvisational expression. In a recent article, one of the three presenters discussed the possibility of encouraging learning programming through group performances not involving computers, mentioning compositions and performances that mix musical, physical, and verbal expression. Children’s performances have sequential, repetitive, and branching algorithmic relationships each other. However, this suggestion had not been realized in a classroom setting. Therefore, this study aims to illustrate what teachers should be conscious of and reflect on in order to promote programming learning through the mixed media composition. Sixth graders (11-12 years old) in Hiroshima attended a practice class that featured the composing and performance of mixed media compositions in a context of programming learning. Instructors should be conscious of three main points when conducting such a class. First, since children are unfamiliar with composing an algorithm for performance, linking indeterminate elements to conditional execution and performance of such compositions, it is necessary to allow sufficient time for the activity and to help them understand its character. Second, there is a relationship between planning (composition) and improvisation and indeterminacy in a live performance. The teacher must provide appropriate guidance so that performances neither adhere too closely or stray too far from the compositions. Third, teachers should encourage awareness of the affinities between the algorithms inherent in the performances and compositions and the algorithms inherent in the children’s daily lives., preprint
