Self-introduction
English is now the most spoken language in the world, and there are many learners all over the world. However, unlike one's native language, which is acquired unconsciously, English, as a second language (L2), does not improve rapidly in proportion to the time and effort spent, and there are considerable individual differences. Why? I am interested in this puzzle. Such L2 mystery would be ascribed to learners' psychological aspects and learning environment. In particular, I have researched learner identity and language ideology within positioning theory and language rights. Recently, my research interests include English-medium instruction and internationalization of higher education.
