- Actuality of Unequal Intergenerational Responsibility: Hans Jonas and Karl-Otto Apel on the Ethics of Technology, KIRIHARA, Takahiro, 23rd biennial international conference of the Society for Philosophy and Technology, 2023/06/09, Without Invitation, English, Society for Philosophy and Technology, Tokyo, (Summary) According to Hans Jonas, the scope of responsibility should extend beyond the current generation of human society to subsequent generations, to human nature, and to the entire biosphere. Karl-Otto Apel criticized that, the human survival as ‘categorical imperative’, as Jonas argues, without consideration of means, could also be realized by Social Darwinism and he emphasizes that it is imperative to solve the problem of human survival in tandem with the realization of the ideal of justice, for which not only the idea of preservation but also of progress should be emphasized. On the other hand, in the end of 1960s, Jonas also clarified the virtue-ethical concepts, such as devotion and self-sacrifice in technological progress. This idea of Jonas could not only be compatible with the deontological ethics of consent between equal parties, but rather a prerequisite that enables it.
